Democratic socialist Mamdani refuses to back Israel as Jewish state in NYC race

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and mayoral hopeful in New York City, has reaffirmed his support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. During a recent Q&A session with other Democratic primary candidates hosted by the UJA-Federation of New York, Mamdani stood by his belief in the BDS movement, which he described as a “legitimate movement” that seeks compliance with international law.

When questioned by Jewish Insider’s editor-in-chief, Josh Kraushaar, about whether Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state, Mamdani carefully sidestepped the question. He stated that he believes Israel has a right to exist with equal rights for all, but did not explicitly mention whether it should exist as a Jewish state.

Mamdani, who is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has faced scrutiny for his views on Israel. A video surfaced showing him leading a BDS chant at an anti-Israel protest in May 2021. Despite this, he received a warm reception at the UJA-Federation event, which took place shortly after a tragic incident where two Israeli Embassy staff members were killed in Washington, DC.

During the event, Mamdani was asked about his statement that he would order the NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he ever visited New York City. Mamdani defended his position by citing international law and the International Criminal Court’s warrant for Netanyahu, adding that he would have the same response for other world leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mamdani’s campaign spokesman, Andrew Epstein, emphasized that the candidate has consistently supported Israel’s right to exist and has advocated for compliance with international law through non-violent means. Despite facing criticism for not signing resolutions recognizing Israel and the Holocaust, Mamdani remains committed to his beliefs regarding Israel.

As a mayoral candidate in a city with a large Jewish population, Mamdani’s stance on Israel has been a point of contention. However, he has continued to push for policies like the “Not On Our Dime Act,” which would prevent New York nonprofits from supporting groups involved in West Bank settlements.

Overall, Mamdani’s unwavering support for the BDS movement and his nuanced views on Israel have sparked debate among voters and the Jewish community in New York City. His campaign continues to prioritize issues of international law, human rights, and equality for all.
