Trump excoriates bishop as ‘Radical Left hard line Trump hater’ after politically charged prayer service

President Donald Trump found himself in a heated exchange with Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington after she delivered politically charged remarks during an interfaith service at the Washington National Cathedral. The service, held the day after Trump’s inauguration, was intended to be a time of prayer for the country.

In her address, Bishop Budde implored President Trump to show mercy towards those in the country who are living in fear. She specifically mentioned LGBTQ children and immigrants, highlighting the struggles they face in today’s political climate. She called on the president to consider the well-being of these vulnerable populations and to extend compassion and welcome to those in need.

President Trump took to Truth Social to express his disdain for Bishop Budde’s comments, labeling her a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.” He criticized her for not acknowledging the issue of illegal immigrants committing crimes in the country. Trump also criticized the overall tone and content of the service, deeming it boring and uninspiring.

In response to Bishop Budde’s remarks, Rep. Andy Barr, a conservative Episcopalian, expressed disappointment in her politicization of the prayer service. He defended President Trump’s appointments of individuals like openly gay Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and immigrant Elon Musk, suggesting that Bishop Budde’s criticisms were unwarranted.

Despite the backlash from President Trump and others, Bishop Budde has been vocal about her opposition to the former president in the past. In a video clip shared by ABC News in 2020, she called for Trump to be replaced.
