More than a dozen Canadian Sikhs face active assassination threats, organization warns
Several Canadian Sikhs are currently living under active threats on their lives, according to a warning from an advocacy organization. Balpreet Singh, a lawyer and spokesperson for the World Sikh Organization, stated that these threats are originating from India. This has raised concerns about the upcoming G7 meeting, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend.
At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Balpreet Singh and Moninder Singh, a spokesperson for the Sikh Federation (Canada), called for action against India. Moninder Singh shared his personal experience of living in constant fear, having received warnings from law enforcement about threats on his life multiple times in the last few years. He described the difficulties of constantly looking over his shoulder, avoiding public places, and missing out on important family events.
The two men urged the Canadian government to not only rescind Modi’s invitation to the G7 meeting but also to launch a public inquiry into Indian foreign interference and transnational repression in Canada. They also called for the cancellation of intelligence-sharing agreements between the two countries. This comes in light of reports that former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was targeted by a suspected Indian government agent in 2023, resulting in him needing police protection.
The issue of Canadian politicians feeling fearful to criticize India due to concerns for their safety was also raised. Balpreet Singh highlighted the impact this has on democracy, as politicians may be hesitant to speak out against foreign interference. The decision to invite Modi to the G7 meeting has sparked controversy, with some Liberal MPs defending the invite while others raise concerns about the safety of Canadian Sikhs.
Canada-India relations have been strained since allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Canadian Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. The ongoing threats faced by Canadian Sikhs highlight the importance of addressing foreign interference and ensuring the safety of all individuals in Canada. It is crucial for the government to take action to protect those who are at risk and uphold the values of democracy and security.
