EU bans chemicals used in gelmanicures due to health problems

The European Union has recently made a significant decision that will impact the beauty industry – the banning of a chemical used in gel manicures. Gel manicures have been a popular choice for many individuals due to their long-lasting nature and shiny finish. However, as of 1 September 2025, the use of Trimethylbenzoyl Difenylphosphinoxide (TPO) in gel polishing agents will no longer be permitted.
TPO is a key ingredient in gel polish that reacts under UV light to quickly harden the polish and give it a glass-like finish. While this chemical has been effective in creating durable manicures, studies have linked exposure to TPO to fertility issues. As a result, the EU has classified TPO as a category 1B CMR substance, indicating its potential to cause cancer or reproductive damage. This classification has led to an automatic ban on the use of TPO in cosmetic products.
The ban on TPO will have a significant impact on nail salons and consumers who regularly opt for gel manicures. However, the beauty industry is already working on reformulating gel polishes with alternative ingredients such as TPO-L, BAPO, and Methyl benzoyl format to comply with the new regulations.
In addition to the chemical concerns, there has been discussion about the potential health risks associated with the use of UV or LED lamps during gel manicures. These lamps are used to quickly dry gel polish but emit ultraviolet rays that can penetrate the skin and cause damage. While the relationship between nail salon lamps and cancer is still under study, it is recommended to take precautions when using these devices.
Overall, the ban on TPO in gel polishes highlights the EU’s commitment to ensuring the safety of cosmetic products. While this decision may present challenges for nail salons and consumers in the short term, it also provides an opportunity for the beauty industry to innovate and develop safer alternatives for gel manicures.
