Navy deploys another Houthi-fighting warship to new US southern border mission

The USS Stockdale recently arrived at its home port in San Diego after completing a seven-month deployment to the 3rd, 5th, and 7th fleet areas of operations. The guided-missile destroyer, part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, successfully repelled multiple Iranian-backed Houthi attacks during its time in the 5th Fleet. The ship was also involved in escorting U.S.-flagged vessels in the Gulf of Aden and engaging and defeating unmanned aerial-ship cruise missiles.

In response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders regarding national security and border protection, the Navy deployed the USS Stockdale to support U.S. Northern Command’s southern border operations. The ship left Naval Base San Diego to join efforts to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling at the southern border. This deployment aligns with the Department of Defense’s coordinated efforts to comply with the executive orders.

Upon its return to San Diego, the USS Stockdale will continue its operations with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment. The ship sustained no damage during its deployment and its personnel remained uninjured. Stockdale’s role in supporting critical Department of Homeland Security capabilities gaps underscores the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders.

The USS Stockdale’s deployment to the southern border follows the deployment of two other Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, USS Spruance and USS Gravely, in March. These warships play a vital role in implementing border-related executive orders and supporting national security efforts. As the Navy continues to adapt to evolving threats and challenges, the USS Stockdale’s mission highlights the versatility and readiness of the U.S. military in protecting the country’s interests at home and abroad.
