NBA Legend Charles Barkley Criticizes Lakers’ Handling of Bronny James
Charles Barkley, a prominent figure in the NBA, has recently voiced his concerns regarding the Los Angeles Lakers’ management of rookie player Bronny James this season. Bronny, the 20-year-old son of superstar LeBron James, was drafted by the Lakers in the second round of the NBA Draft in June, marking a historic moment as he joined his father on the roster.
In October, the father-son duo made headlines by becoming the first father-son pair to play together in an NBA game. However, Bronny’s playing time has been limited, leading to his assignment to the team’s G League affiliate, South Bay Lakers, earlier this month.
Currently, Bronny plays for the G League team during home games but returns to the NBA roster for away games, a decision that has raised eyebrows among critics, including Charles Barkley.
Barkley criticized the Lakers’ handling of Bronny, stating, “They’ve handled it awfully. The kid is not ready to play in the NBA. He should be in the G League where he can develop his skills. He’s not going to improve by sitting on the bench.”
Regarding the alternating schedule between the NBA and G League, Barkley expressed his disapproval, saying, “It’s not fair to him or the team. It’s a disservice to Bronny, and it puts unnecessary pressure on the coach.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick defended the team’s decision, stating that the plan to have Bronny split time between the NBA and G League was discussed and agreed upon from the beginning of the season.
Despite the criticisms, Bronny has shown promise in the G League, recording 10 points, five rebounds, and six assists in two games. LeBron James, proud of working alongside his son, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the court with him.
While the situation continues to spark debate, it remains to be seen how the Lakers will navigate Bronny’s development and playing time throughout the season.
