NDP expected to choose interim leader Monday evening: sources

New Democrats are gearing up to select an interim leader following a disappointing election night that saw the party lose its leader, Jagmeet Singh, and fall to its worst showing in history. The federal council, the party’s governing body between national conventions, is set to meet on Monday evening to make this important decision.

With only seven of the 24 incumbent MPs returning to the House of Commons, the NDP has lost its recognized party status. This means fewer opportunities to speak during question period, no additional budget for the leader’s office or research bureau, and no guaranteed seats on standing committees to shape government legislation. It’s a tough blow for the party, which is now faced with the task of regrouping and moving forward.

The interim leader, who does not have to be an MP, will play a crucial role in guiding the party through this challenging period. Alexandre Boulerice, the party’s lone Quebec MP and deputy leader, has expressed interest in the interim job but has ruled out running for the permanent leadership position. This mirrors the situation in 2011 when Nycole Turmel stepped in as interim leader after Jack Layton’s health issues forced him to step aside. Turmel served until the party selected Thomas Mulcair as its new leader in 2012.

Turmel, reflecting on the recent election result, emphasized the importance of fundraising and preparing for a successful leadership race. Despite not holding official party status, she noted that the NDP still has a significant role to play in the minority Parliament, potentially holding the balance of power alongside the Bloc Québécois. The interim leader may have a key role in negotiations with other parties, advocating for the NDP’s priorities and making their voice heard.

Gord Johns, the NDP’s sole Vancouver Island MP, acknowledged the challenges ahead for the party, emphasizing the need for internal rebuilding. He highlighted the importance of unity and strategic planning to move the party forward in the wake of the election setback.

As the NDP navigates this critical juncture, the selection of an interim leader will be a pivotal moment in shaping the party’s future trajectory. The new leader will need to inspire confidence, rally support, and lay the groundwork for a successful leadership transition. Despite the tough road ahead, there is optimism and determination within the NDP ranks to overcome challenges and emerge stronger than ever.
