Netanyahu slams Carney over response to heckler’s Gaza ‘genocide’ claim

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for seemingly validating an anti-Israel protester’s claim of a “genocide” in Gaza. In a post on social media, Netanyahu condemned Carney for not supporting Israel, a democracy engaged in a just war against the terrorist group Hamas.

The incident occurred at a rally in Calgary, Alberta, where a protester shouted that there was a genocide happening in Palestine. Carney, in response, thanked the protester and mentioned Canada’s arms embargo in relation to the situation in Gaza, sparking outrage among Canadian Jewish organizations. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) tweeted its objection to Carney’s remarks, calling them dangerous and false.

Hampstead Mayor Jeremy Levi, a member of Canada’s Conservative Party, also condemned Carney’s comments, labeling them a “disgraceful betrayal of moral clarity.” He accused Carney of endorsing false and slanderous claims against Israel, showing a lack of leadership and respect.

When asked to clarify his statements, Carney claimed he did not hear the word “genocide” from the protester due to noise at the rally. However, his initial response drew criticism and backlash from various quarters for appearing to side with anti-Israel sentiments.

Canada’s decision to halt arms sales to Israel in January 2024, followed by the suspension of permits for companies involved in supplying arms to Israel, has been a point of contention. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly reiterated Canada’s stance of not sending any form of arms or parts to Gaza, emphasizing the country’s position on the conflict.

The incident underscores the complex dynamics surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with political leaders facing scrutiny for their responses and actions. Netanyahu’s criticism of Carney reflects the ongoing tensions and differing perspectives on the situation in the Middle East.
