Olympia, the world’s tallest snowwoman was made in 2008 and stood at 122 feet tall

Bethel, Maine, holds a special place in the Guinness World Records for creating the tallest snowperson ever built. The record-breaking snowwoman, named Olympia, was completed on February 26, 2008, and stood an impressive 122 feet and 1 inch tall. This towering figure was a source of pride for the residents of Bethel, who had previously set a record in 1999 with their first snowman, Angus King of the Mountain.

Creating Olympia was no small feat, as it took about a month and a whopping 13 million pounds of snow to bring her to life. The construction process involved large trucks transporting piles of snow and cranes lifting the snow to the top of the snowwoman. Olympia’s accessories were truly unique, with skis used for eyelashes, a nose made from chicken wire and painted cheesecloth, and lips fashioned from red car tires. The buttons on her snow attire were crafted from three truck tires, and her arms were made from towering 30-foot spruce trees.

Despite Olympia melting away, the record still stands in Bethel. While there have been attempts to break the record, such as the snowman constructed in Donnersbachwald, Austria in February 2020, the official Guinness World Records website still recognizes Olympia as the tallest snowperson ever built. The snowman in Austria was initially reported to have surpassed Olympia in height, but it was later disqualified for unknown reasons.

The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce was informed that as long as Olympia’s record is still in the Guinness World Records book, they can continue to claim the title. The pride and joy that the residents of Bethel feel for their record-breaking snowwoman are evident, as Olympia’s legacy lives on despite her eventual melting. It serves as a reminder of the creativity and dedication of the community in Bethel, Maine, who came together to achieve something truly remarkable.
