Once facing collapse, Liberals say they’re raking in money and high-profile candidates

The federal Liberals have experienced a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes since the entrance of Prime Minister Mark Carney onto the political scene. Previously struggling to attract donors and high-profile candidates, the party is now thriving, with a surge in interest from individuals wanting to run for office.
Just a few months ago, the Liberals were facing a crisis under Justin Trudeau’s leadership. The party had lost ground in key areas, MPs and cabinet ministers were leaving, and their popularity was declining in the polls. However, the tables have turned, and the Liberals now find themselves leading in the polls, with a renewed sense of energy and momentum.
Party spokesperson Matteo Rossi revealed that over 100 individuals have expressed interest in becoming Liberal candidates since Carney took over as leader. One such candidate is former journalist Evan Solomon, who announced his bid for office on social media. Solomon, who has a history of working with Carney, expressed his desire to serve his community and country in these challenging times.
The Liberal Party has also seen a resurgence in the return of former candidates who had previously stepped back from politics. Industry Minister Anita Anand and New Brunswick backbencher Wayne Long have both decided to run for re-election under Carney’s leadership. The party has also experienced a significant increase in fundraising, with over $1 million raised in the first 72 hours after Carney’s election as leader.
As the election campaign kicks into high gear, Carney is expected to ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call for a federal election. The campaign is projected to last between 36 and 50 days, with election day rumored to be either April 28 or May 5. While the Conservatives currently lead in the number of nominated candidates, the Liberals are not far behind, with plans to nominate candidates in all 343 ridings.
The Conservatives, on the other hand, have also been making waves with their choice of candidates, including former chief of the Enoch Cree Nation Billy Morin and law enforcement officer Jessy Sahota. The party has been particularly successful in fundraising, nearly doubling the combined donations of the Liberals and NDP in 2024.
Overall, the political landscape in Canada is shifting, with the Liberals under Mark Carney’s leadership making a strong comeback. With a diverse range of candidates and a renewed sense of purpose, the party is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming election.
