Former Mayor Eric Adams aide accused of giving reporter cash in chip bag

New York City Reporter Allegedly Target of Bribery Attempt by Former Eric Adams Aide
A New York City reporter found herself in a bizarre situation when a former aide to Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently seeking reelection, allegedly attempted to bribe her with a bag of cash hidden in a bag of potato chips.
The incident reportedly took place after a campaign event in Harlem, where Winnie Greco, a longtime Adams ally, approached City Hall reporter Katie Honan with the unusual offering. Honan initially thought Greco was offering her a snack but later discovered a red envelope containing cash inside the bag of chips.

Upon realizing the contents of the bag, Honan contacted Greco to return the money, but the former aide suggested they meet in Chinatown. Greco later apologized, attributing the incident to a “culture thing” and a gesture of friendship.
THE CITY, the publication Honan works for, reported the incident to the Department of Investigation (DOI), prompting an investigation into the matter.
Adams Campaign Reacts
Following the incident, the Adams campaign took action by prohibiting Greco from participating in volunteer campaign-related activities. Greco’s attorney, Steven Brill, defended her actions, claiming it was a Chinese custom to give money as a sign of gratitude and friendship.

Greco, who has been under federal investigation for some time, faced scrutiny in the past for her involvement in Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign and allegations of pressuring a campaign volunteer for personal tasks.
Investigations and Fallout
The DOI is currently looking into the incident involving Greco and Honan, as well as other allegations against the former aide. Despite the controversy, neither Greco nor the Adams campaign have provided further comments on the matter.
As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about the intersection of politics, ethics, and personal relationships in the realm of public service.
