Dozens of House Dems vote with GOP to deport illegal immigrants with DUIs

A bipartisan bill aimed at deporting illegal immigrants convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) has garnered significant support from 37 House Democrats. The bill, introduced by Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., passed by a vote of 246 to 160, with no Republicans opposing it.
Among the Democrats who voted in favor of the legislation are Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, Rep. Laura Gillen, D-N.Y., Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash. This bipartisan support underscores the importance of holding individuals accountable for breaking the law and endangering American lives.
The bill, named after Jeremy and Angel Seay, a couple from Rep. Moore’s community who were killed by an illegal immigrant driving under the influence, also honors slain Arizona police officer Brandon Mendoza, who lost his life in a similar tragic incident. These heartbreaking stories highlight the urgent need for stricter measures to address DUI offenses committed by illegal immigrants.
However, not all Democrats supported the bill, with some arguing that it was driven by fearmongering and lacked evidence linking immigration status to drunk driving incidents. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., expressed skepticism about the bill’s effectiveness in addressing the broader issues within the immigration system.
Despite opposition from some Democrats, Rep. Moore emphasized the importance of holding illegal immigrants accountable for their actions, especially when they result in the loss of American lives. He expressed disappointment in the 160 Democrats who voted against the bill, suggesting that they are resistant to any reforms related to immigration enforcement.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., was among those who voted against the bill, reflecting the division within the Democratic Party on this issue. The legislation now awaits consideration in the Senate and, if passed, would need President Donald Trump’s signature to become law.
Overall, the bipartisan support for this bill underscores the importance of addressing the serious consequences of drunk driving by illegal immigrants and prioritizing public safety. By holding individuals accountable for their actions, lawmakers are taking a proactive step towards ensuring the well-being of all individuals in the country.
