Police still looking for leads in father-to-be’s death on Halifax waterfront

Halifax police say more information in the death of a 26-year-old man who was assaulted in Halifax on Sunday night may be coming this week, but they aren’t releasing any more details right now.

Police haven’t named the victim but online posts have identified him as Davelle Desmond.

Police were called about a disturbance on the boardwalk in the 1500 block of Lower Water Street shortly before 9:45 p.m. and found Desmond unconscious when they arrived on the scene.

First aid was administered until an ambulance arrived and rushed him to hospital, where he later died.

Const. John MacLeod said Tuesday that police aren’t commenting on whether or not a weapon was involved or what is believed to have caused the fatal injury. Some online reports suggest Desmond was assaulted and struck his head.

“I don’t have any of those details at this point,” MacLeod said.

“Right now, that is with the medical examiner’s office. Hopefully by (Wednesday) we’ll have some more details.”

Whether the assault was a random incident or carried out by someone known to Desmond is still part of the investigation, said MacLeod.

“(Investigators) are still looking into it; it’s still early in the investigation,” he said.

“I know they’re still gathering a lot of information.”

There had been no arrests or charges laid as of Tuesday afternoon.

Desmond and his girlfriend were expecting a child in November, online posts say. His uncle, Kevin Desmond, has started a gofundme campaign to help with funeral costs and for after the baby is born.
