PRIDE weekend in full swing at ball tournament

The Pride SLAM Softball Tournament at Deerfoot Athletic Park in Calgary was a vibrant display of community and inclusivity over the weekend. Teams from the Calgary Apollo Softball Association, a non-profit LGBTQ2S+ softball league, gathered to celebrate Pride in a fun and competitive environment.

Matt Daniels, a member of CASA’s board of directors, emphasized the welcoming nature of the tournament, stating that while it is geared towards the LGBTQ2S+ community, players of all backgrounds are encouraged to participate. The event showcased a diverse range of skill levels, with some players having high-level experience and others being new to the game.

The one-day Pride SLAM tournament is a highlight of Pride weekend, offering a lighthearted and enjoyable experience for all involved. With 16 teams and 18 players on each team, the emphasis is on camaraderie and fun under the sun.

As the tournament wrapped up, attention turned to the upcoming Pride parade in Calgary. Scheduled for Sunday, the parade will feature a procession down 9th Avenue S.E., followed by festivities at Prince’s Island Park. The theme for this year’s Pride celebrations is “Bursting into Bloom,” highlighting local organizations that promote inclusion and positive change in the community.

The Pride festivities aim to bring people together in a spirit of acceptance, love, and community. With a focus on celebrating diversity and embracing the joys and struggles of the Calgary community, the events promise a weekend of unity and celebration.
