Racist text messages sent across the US will be investigated by authorities

Federal investigators are currently looking into a disturbing incident involving offensive text messages that were sent to cellphone numbers across the country this week. The messages contained slavery imagery and targeted recipients, including school-aged children and college students, with the promise of being taken to a plantation. Most of the recipients of these messages were Black individuals, and it is unclear how their numbers were obtained or if non-Black recipients were also contacted.

One recipient, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with NBC4 Washington that she received a message stating that she had been “selected to pick cotton.” The text message read, “Greetings, You have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Be ready at 12PM SHARP with your belongings. Our Executive Slaves will come get you in a Black Van, be prepared to be searched down once you’ve entered the plantation. You are in Plantation Group S.”

Another recipient named Maya, speaking to FOX 4 Dallas, expressed her deep disturbance upon receiving a racist text message. She mentioned that the derogatory language used in the message was hurtful and frightening, as she had not experienced such blatant racism before.

The FBI has confirmed the existence of these offensive text messages and has launched an investigation into the matter. In a public statement, the agency stated that they are in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities regarding the incidents. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also condemned the messages, with FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel emphasizing the seriousness of such targeting.

Fox News Digital reached out to the FBI for updates on the investigation but has not yet received a response. The FBI encourages members of the public to report any threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities.

The disturbing nature of these messages underscores the need for continued vigilance against hate speech and discrimination. It is crucial for authorities to investigate and take appropriate action against those responsible for spreading such harmful messages. We must stand united against racism and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
