Piggy reunion show to steal Haligonians’ hearts all over again

Local music enthusiasts in Halifax are gearing up for a nostalgic and exciting event next week on Gottingen Street. Piggy the Calypso Orchestra of the Maritimes, a beloved band from the late 90s and early 2000s, will be reuniting for a one-night-only show on May 8.

Piggy was known for their eclectic and energetic performances that won the hearts of many Haligonians. With a lineup of up to 10 musicians, including guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, horns, flute, clarinet, banjo, accordion, and even the occasional kazoo, their shows were a joyful and raucous celebration of music.

Lead singer Paul Gailiunas shared that the band’s music was driven by ideals of social justice and infused with kindness. Their songs touched on themes of inequality, poverty, capitalism, and other serious subjects, but always delivered with a playful sound. Tracks like “The Person Behind the Counter,” “The Thin Man,” “She’s Stepping Out,” and “Emma Goldman” showcased Piggy’s unique blend of fun and meaningful lyrics.

Despite Halifax’s music scene being dominated by bands aiming for record deals and fame, Piggy’s focus was on creating a communal art project filled with love and wackiness. Drummer Graham MacDougall highlighted that the band’s sound was intentionally ad hoc and ad libbed, adding to their charm.

The upcoming reunion show will feature original members, including Gailiunas and MacDougall, with some coming from out of town for the occasion. Rehearsals will be limited, giving the performance a scrappy and authentic feel reminiscent of Piggy’s original spirit.

Piggy’s music was deeply rooted in the community, particularly the North End of Halifax where many band members lived. Gailiunas, a doctor, practiced medicine in the neighborhood and often drew inspiration for songs from his walks around the area.

As fans eagerly anticipate the show, they can rest assured that there will always be room for them “Down on Gottingen Street,” echoing Piggy’s immortal words of inclusivity and joy.
