In a shocking turn of events, Karen Read revealed in a 2024 interview for an Investigation Discovery documentary that she took matters into her own hands after receiving a “weak pour” at a bar on the night her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, passed away. Dissatisfied with the alcohol content of her drink, she decided to add extra shots to her glass, turning each drink into a double.
During her retrial on murder charges, a clip of Read discussing her actions at CF McCarthy’s bar in Canton was shown in court. She explained how she poured multiple shots into her glass because the drinks served were too weak, stating that her vodka soda tasted like soda water with lime.
According to Read, she complained to O’Keefe about the drinks, and he suggested adding more shots himself. This led her to pour additional shots into her glass throughout the evening, resulting in a cocktail with three drinks in it.
Text messages exchanged between Read and O’Keefe on the day of his death were also presented in court. The messages revealed tensions between the couple, with O’Keefe expressing frustration over arguments and indicating that he needed space.
Despite highlighting Read’s drinking, experts believe that jurors may sympathize with her over O’Keefe’s responses in the text messages. The conversations showed a normal couple dealing with relationship issues, rather than providing a motive for murder.
As the trial continues, the defense theorizes that O’Keefe’s injuries may not have been caused by a collision with Read’s SUV, but rather from a possible altercation with another man at the party. The jury is set to visit the crime scene for an in-person viewing when the trial resumes.
