Sawatsky Sign-Off: B.C. man reunites with stranger who saved him from drowning
SYDNEY, N.S. –
On a cold winter day, Brian Lavery was driving near the water when he thought he saw a dog splashing in the waves. However, upon closer inspection, he realized that it was not a dog but a small child struggling in the water.
Acting quickly, Brian raced into the frigid water until it reached his chest and found a small boy floating face down. It was a traumatic experience for Brian, fearing the worst until he turned the child over and saw his face.
The boy, Michael Pickup, was just two years old at the time of the incident in 1968. Brian managed to rescue him and bring him safely to shore, a moment that stayed with him for years to come.
Fast forward to present day, Michael, now a grown man, came across an old newspaper article recounting the incident that saved his life. Determined to find Brian, he located him in Nova Scotia and flew across the country to meet him for the first time in 56 years.
The reunion was emotional for both men, with Michael expressing his gratitude to Brian for saving his life. He credits Brian as his hero and acknowledges that he wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for him.
Inspired by the experience, Michael has dedicated his life to helping others, serving as B.C.’s auditor general and receiving recognition for his outstanding public service. He views his second chance at life as an opportunity to make a positive impact in everything he does.
Brian, reflecting on the incident and subsequent reunions, emphasizes the importance of cherishing every moment and helping others in need. He shares that he has saved two other people from drowning over the years, reinforcing the preciousness of life.
In a world where the past and future can consume us, Brian’s message is clear – live in the present, cherish every moment, and extend a helping hand to those in need.
