Here are the best ways to declutter your closet

Decluttering your closet can be a breeze with the “one in, one out” rule, as recommended by an Ottawa specialist.

Martha Tobin, owner of Declutter4Good, suggests that when you purchase a new item, you should remove one item from your closet. This helps maintain balance and equilibrium in your home, preventing clutter from building up.

According to Tobin, the item you remove doesn’t have to be the same category as the new purchase. It could be clothing, shoes, kitchen items, or anything else you no longer need.

Setting up donation bins in convenient locations around your home can make decluttering even easier. Simply drop unwanted items in the bins as you come across them.

At the end of each season, Tobin recommends a closet-clearing session. One tip is to hang all your clothes backwards and then turn them forward as you wear them. This way, you can easily see which items you actually use.

Organizing your clothes by color and style can also help you identify duplicates or items you no longer need. Tobin suggests using transparent plastic boxes to store out-of-season clothes, making it easy to see what’s inside.

How to Maximize Closet Space

Tobin suggests using baskets and bins to store items on closet shelves. Group similar items together, like jeans in one basket and scarves in another, and place them on the top shelf for easy access.

Adding more shelves can create additional storage space for your clothing items. Make use of unused space, such as the back of doors, by installing over-the-door shoe racks or clothing holders.
