Service providers in N.S. town call for more housing options after man dies in tent
Community service providers in Windsor, Nova Scotia are speaking out about the urgent need for more support for vulnerable individuals following the tragic death of a man living in a tent last week. The man, who was a familiar face to many in the community, was found deceased in his tent on Tuesday afternoon.
Kimm Kent, the director of Peer Outreach Support Services and Education (POSSE Project), expressed deep sadness over the loss of their friend and client. Kent emphasized that the lack of supportive housing played a significant role in the man’s untimely death. She highlighted the importance of transitional supportive housing as a vital solution to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The West Hants RCMP confirmed that they responded to the sudden death in Windsor, with no suspicion of foul play. The investigation has been turned over to Nova Scotia’s medical examiner for further examination.
Kent underscored the pressing need for more housing options and comprehensive services to address the escalating homelessness crisis in the area. She described the current situation as the worst she has witnessed in her 30 years of working in the field.
Brandon Burgess, who had previously experienced homelessness, shared his grief over the loss of his close friend. Burgess recounted the challenges of living in a tent and the constant fear for his safety. He currently volunteers with a local organization that assists homeless individuals, now that he has found stable housing with his uncle.
In response to the growing need, a temporary warming center has been established at the Hants Aquatic Centre in Windsor. The center offers shelter, food, activities, and companionship for those in need, providing a brief respite for individuals facing homelessness, especially as winter approaches. Leslie Porter, the director of West Hants Caremongers, emphasized the importance of providing support to individuals to help them feel valued and deserving of assistance.
Porter revealed that she had recently secured permanent housing for the man who tragically passed away, underscoring the challenges in accessing essential services in the community. Despite his willingness to seek help, the lack of accessible resources ultimately contributed to his untimely death.
The community is rallying together to advocate for increased support and resources for vulnerable individuals, with a renewed commitment to addressing the root causes of homelessness and ensuring that no one is left behind.
