Sheshatshiu, N.L., leaders barricade town as residents discuss how to deal with flow of drugs

Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation Chief Eugene Hart and Yvette Michel are speaking out about the drug crisis facing their town. With a population of about 1,200 people, the central Labrador Innu community has been struggling with the influx of illegal substances, leading community leaders to take drastic measures.
In an effort to combat the flow of drugs into Sheshatshiu, checkpoints have been set up at the town’s entrances. Community safety officers now have the authority to deny entry to vehicles and individuals who are known to be involved in drug-related activities. This move comes after numerous community meetings where residents shared their concerns and ideas to address the issue.
Chief Eugene Hart emphasized the need for community involvement in tackling the drug crisis, stating, “We need the help of the community as well in order to move forward. Because we can’t do it on our own.” Yvette Michel echoed this sentiment, expressing her fear of losing loved ones to addiction and overdoses. She called for action to protect the next generation from the harmful effects of drugs.
The RCMP has been working alongside community safety officers to enforce the entry restrictions and remove banned individuals from the community. Despite some resistance, community members are determined to address the root causes of drug abuse and addiction. Florence Milley, who helped organize the community meetings, stressed the importance of coming together to find solutions and offer support to those in need.
Pashanish Penashue shared his personal experience with addiction, highlighting the devastating impact drugs can have on individuals and families. He emphasized the need for comprehensive treatment and support services in the community to prevent further harm. Other residents also spoke out about the urgent need for immediate action to address the drug crisis.
As community leaders and residents work together to combat the drug epidemic, they are calling for increased resources and funding to support addiction treatment and prevention efforts. The goal is to create a safer and healthier environment for all residents of Sheshatshiu. By fostering collaboration and support, the community hopes to overcome the challenges posed by drug abuse and build a brighter future for generations to come.
