Specialist school to expand after the country exchange

Exciting developments are on the horizon for special educational needs (SEND) schools in West Yorkshire, as Calderdale Council unveils plans for more school places under their innovative “Land-Wapping” initiative.

The council has identified a shortage of facilities for children with additional needs in the area, resulting in students having to attend schools outside the district. To address this issue, the council is looking to utilize a piece of empty land owned by the municipality to build a new specialist high school.

Currently, Ravenscliffe High School in Calderdale caters to young people between the ages of 11 and 19, spread across two locations. The proposed expansion of the campus at Spring Hall in Halifax aims to provide more support and resources for students with SEND.

Alderman Adam Wilkinson, responsible for children and services at Calderdale Council, emphasized the importance of meeting the increased demand for specialized school places in the area. He highlighted the council’s commitment to expanding provision and accommodating more students with SEND.

The council is set to discuss these plans during a cabinet meeting on September 1st at 16:00 BST. This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring that all children in Calderdale have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
