38 bodies in Texas lake spark serial killer fears despite police denials

The mysterious deaths of young men in Texas’ Lady Bird Lake have left the community on edge, with rumors of a serial killer swirling around the area. Since 2022, a total of 38 bodies have been recovered from the waters, raising concerns about the safety of those who frequent the popular spot.

The most recent discovery came when authorities responded to a 911 call reporting a body in the water. Upon locating the deceased man, the Austin Police Department stated that there was no sign of foul play involved, but they are working to confirm the identity of the individual, who is believed to be a missing 17-year-old male.

The teen’s family reported him missing after he got out of his kayak without a life jacket and disappeared while on the lake. It is suspected that he may have stepped on an underwater shelf and failed to resurface. The body found was wearing the same clothing as the missing teenager, but identification is still pending.

Despite authorities’ insistence that there is no ongoing risk to the public, Dr. Carole Lieberman, a forensic psychiatrist, believes that the high number of male victims found in and around the lake suggests the work of a serial killer. With 30 out of the 38 bodies recovered being men, and most between the ages of 30 and 49, the consistency raises red flags.

One theory circulating in the community is that date-rape drugs could be responsible for rendering victims vulnerable to theft and harm. Cases like the deaths of Jason John and Jonathan Honey, who were both found after visiting establishments near the lake, have fueled speculation about foul play.

While the primary cause of death for the bodies recovered has been labeled as accidental drownings, with suicide, natural causes, and drug overdoses following closely behind, only one death has been ruled a murder. Dr. Lieberman points out that bodies of water can be ideal for disposing of remains, as they can wash away evidence and make it difficult to determine the cause of death.

As the investigation continues, Lieberman urges authorities not to dismiss the possibility of a serial killer in the area, given the pattern of deaths and the lack of concrete explanations for the tragedies. With more victims continuing to be found in Lady Bird Lake, the community remains on edge, hoping for answers and justice for those who have lost their lives in the mysterious waters.
