Terrorism spreading across the globe, research group finds

The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) recently released its 2025 report, revealing a troubling trend in the rise of lone-wolf terrorist attacks in the West. According to the report, the number of countries experiencing terrorist attacks increased from 58 in 2023 to 66 in 2024, marking a significant setback in global efforts to combat terrorism.

One of the most concerning findings in the report is that 93% of fatal attacks in the West were carried out by lone wolf terrorists. These individuals, who operate without formal group affiliations, are increasingly radicalizing through online platforms such as social media, gaming sites, and encrypted messaging apps.

“The majority of Western attacks are now carried out by individuals without formal group affiliations, who radicalize through social media, gaming platforms, and encrypted messaging apps,” the GTI report stated.

The shift towards online radicalization has made it easier for potential terrorists to access extremist content and organize with minimal physical contact. Algorithms on popular social media sites can drive users towards increasingly extreme content over time, further fueling the spread of terrorism.

In a related development, U.S. authorities recently arrested Mohammad Sharifullah, an alleged member of ISIS-K, who confessed to scouting the route for the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of 13 service members. Sharifullah has been extradited to the United States to face charges of providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, resulting in death.

FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the importance of holding Sharifullah accountable for his role in the attack, stating, “3 and 1/2 years later, justice for our 13.”

President Donald Trump also highlighted Sharifullah’s capture during a recent address to Congress, describing it as a significant victory in the fight against terrorism.

As the threat of lone-wolf terrorist attacks continues to loom large in the West, it is crucial for governments and law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in combating this growing menace. The GTI report serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by terrorism in the modern world and the urgent need for coordinated global action to address this pressing issue.
