Gabbie Hughes scores in OT to lead Charge to victory over Sirens
Gabbie Hughes Leads Ottawa Charge to Overtime Victory Against New York Sirens
In a thrilling matchup on Wednesday night in Ottawa, Gabbie Hughes proved to be the hero for the Ottawa Charge as she scored her second goal of the game just 36 seconds into overtime, securing a 5-4 victory over the struggling New York Sirens in the Professional Women’s Hockey League.
Joining Hughes on the scoresheet were Emily Clark, Shiann Darkangelo, and Taylor House, with Emerance Maschmeyer standing tall in net with 27 saves for the Charge. On the other side, Sarah Fillier, Alex Carpenter, Ella Shelton, and Abby Roque found the back of the net for New York, but it wasn’t enough to break their eight-game losing streak, despite a solid performance from goaltender Corinne Schroeder who made 28 saves.
As the game headed into the final minutes of regulation, Ottawa defender Zoe Boyd made a crucial block to halt a Sirens rush and ultimately send the game into overtime where Hughes would seal the deal with her game-winning goal.
A standout moment in the game came when Taylor House scored her first career goal, deflecting a shot from rookie Stephanie Markowski. The goal not only showcased the depth of talent on the Charge roster but also highlighted the impact of their young stars.
Looking ahead, the Sirens will face off against Boston next, while the Charge will take on Minnesota on Friday, March 7 in Raleigh, North Carolina as part of the nine-game PWHL Takeover Tour.
