House DOGE subcommittee chair Greene wages ‘war on waste’ in first hearing

She raised concerns about the dismantling of federal agencies and the potential risks associated with the Trump administration’s approach to cost-cutting.
One of the witnesses, Stephen Whitson of the Foundation for Government Accountability, provided alarming statistics on improper payments within the Medicaid program. He highlighted the need for congressional action to address eligibility errors, which contribute significantly to waste and fraud in the system.
Whitson proposed three ways for Congress to support the DOGE effort. Firstly, he recommended strengthening the Medicaid program through legislative action, including repealing certain rules that hinder eligibility verification. Secondly, he suggested empowering the president to eliminate unproductive agency employees and streamline operations for greater efficiency. Lastly, he called for the passage of the REINS Act to solidify the DOGE reforms and prevent future administrations from undoing the progress made.
During the hearing, Rep. Eric Burlison played archived footage of former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama pledging to reduce the federal workforce and cut wasteful spending. The video served as a reminder of previous bipartisan efforts to address government inefficiencies and encouraged current lawmakers to follow suit.
