Grade 9 class travels 230 km to bring grad party to P.E.I. teen in Halifax hospital

Fifteen-year-old Lauchlan McCabe, a Grade 9 student, unfortunately had to miss his graduation ceremony due to his ongoing treatment for leukemia at the IWK Health Centre. However, his classmates and teacher went above and beyond to ensure that he had a proper celebration to mark the end of his junior high years.
Despite being 230 kilometres away from their school in rural P.E.I., Lauchlan’s schoolmates and teacher made the journey to Halifax to join him at the children’s hospital for a special graduation ceremony. Lauchlan was touched by the gesture and described it as “different, but really cool.”
During the visit, Lauchlan was surprised to see that some of his friends had shaved their heads in solidarity with him. He also received snacks and a plush toy as graduation gifts, showing the love and support of his classmates.
The day was organized by his teacher, Paige Richards, who worked alongside hospital staff and school administrators to make it happen. The group of 14 students, almost the entire class, traveled to Halifax to be with Lauchlan on his special day.
Despite the emotional challenges of Lauchlan’s illness, his classmates made the day feel natural and fun. They gathered at the hospital’s theatre, enjoyed pizza, and held a small graduation ceremony where Lauchlan received his Grade 9 diploma and a physical education award.
Lauchlan’s mother, Janessa McCabe, expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the community in P.E.I. She mentioned that it was tough to hear the diagnosis, but knowing they have the right treatment and support makes it easier to face the journey ahead.
Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and lymphatic system. Lauchlan’s treatment is scheduled to last at least 2½ years, with the first month posing the most significant challenge. Despite the tough road ahead, Lauchlan remains determined to complete his treatment and get back to playing hockey for his team.
Overall, the ceremony was an emotional and heartwarming moment for Lauchlan and his family. The support and love shown by his classmates and community are a testament to the strength of their bond and the power of friendship during difficult times.
