Elizabeth May won’t lead Green Party in next federal election

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to Step Down Before Next Election

OTTAWA — In a surprising announcement, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has declared that she will not lead the party into the next election. May made this decision known to members via email, stating her intention to remain as an MP and party leader until a new leader is elected.

May expressed her desire to expand the party’s parliamentary caucus before relinquishing her leadership role, with a focus on addressing pressing issues such as the climate crisis, affordability, and justice and peace in conflict-ridden regions.

Details regarding a leadership review and the process for members to participate in a vote will be provided in the near future, according to May. She plans to step down once the new leader, or potentially co-leaders, are selected.

As the sole Green Party representative in the House of Commons following the recent federal election, May’s decision marks a significant transition for the party moving forward.
