Thieves cause thousands in damage to rural N.S. volunteer fire station

A recent break-in at the Southville Fire Department in Digby County, N.S., has left the small volunteer department facing significant losses. Fire Chief Doug Cromwell revealed that thieves targeted their station, stealing a firefighter’s uniform and the hydraulic motor that powers their Jaws of Life equipment, used for rescuing individuals from vehicle accidents. The stolen uniform has left the department down one firefighter, a substantial blow to a team of only 20 members.
Cromwell reported the break-in to the Digby RCMP on March 14 after a painting crew arrived at the station to find broken windows. This incident is not the first time the Southville department has been targeted, with previous thefts including stolen gasoline. However, the recent break-in has resulted in the most extensive losses yet, estimated at $6,000 to $7,000 to replace the stolen equipment and repair the damaged windows.
The Southville Fire Department serves the rural communities of Southville, Riverdale, and Danvers, located southwest of Weymouth, N.S. In response to the theft, the department has arranged to borrow the Jaws of Life equipment from the Havelock fire department and has received support from the Bear River department.
Chief Cromwell expressed dismay at the targeting of a rural department serving small communities, questioning the motives behind stealing the uniform and motor. He emphasized that the department is always willing to help those in need and urged the perpetrators to seek assistance instead of resorting to theft.
According to RCMP, the suspects fled the scene on a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
The Southville Fire Department is now faced with the challenge of replacing vital equipment and ensuring the security of their station to prevent future incidents. The community has rallied behind the department, offering support and assistance in overcoming this setback.
