Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister withdraws as Trump’s nominee to lead DEA

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has made the decision to withdraw his name from consideration as President-elect Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). In a statement posted on X, Chronister expressed his gratitude for the nomination and the support he has received from the American people, but ultimately decided to focus on his responsibilities in Hillsborough County.

In his post, Chronister stated, “To have been nominated by President-Elect @realDonaldTrump to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration is the honor of a lifetime.” However, he went on to explain, “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration. There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling.”

Chronister, who was appointed by then-Florida Governor Rick Scott to lead the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2017, has been re-elected twice. He expressed his appreciation for the nomination and the opportunity, stating, “I sincerely appreciate the nomination, outpouring of support by the American people, and look forward to continuing my service as Sheriff of Hillsborough County.”

This decision by Chronister highlights his dedication to serving the citizens of Hillsborough County and prioritizing the important initiatives he has set forth in his role as Sheriff. While he is honored by the nomination, he believes that his focus should remain on his current responsibilities and the work that still needs to be done in the county.
