In an unprecedented move, two dozen House Republicans from various political backgrounds have come together to support a resolution that calls for the formal recognition of Taiwan. This resolution, spearheaded by Reps. Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry, urges President Donald Trump to abandon the longstanding ‘One China’ Policy and officially acknowledge Taiwan as an autonomous nation.

Rep. Tiffany emphasized that Taiwan has never been under the control of the People’s Republic of China and is a free, democratic, and independent nation. He believes that it is time for U.S. policy to reflect this reality. The resolution also calls for support for Taiwan’s entry into international trade organizations and the negotiation of a bilateral U.S.-Taiwan Free Trade Agreement.

The U.S. severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 and recognized the Communist regime in Beijing. However, the Taiwan Relations Act was passed to maintain unofficial relations with Taiwan and provide military aid. Currently, only 12 countries recognize Taiwan as an independent entity. Any shift in U.S. policy towards Taiwan would likely be met with resistance from Beijing.

China has warned against actions that undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, such as the recent military aid package sent by the U.S. to Taiwan. U.S. military analysts predict that China could be fully prepared for a military invasion of Taiwan by 2027. Despite this, the U.S. has been ambiguous about coming to Taiwan’s defense in the event of an invasion.

President Trump has previously suggested that Taiwan should pay for U.S. defense against Chinese aggression. He likened the relationship to that of an insurance company, stating that Taiwan does not contribute financially to its defense. China has expressed its determination to reunite with Taiwan by force if necessary, leading to increased military activity in the region.

The resolution has garnered support from both interventionist and America First lawmakers, including Reps. Lauren Boebert, Carlos Gimenez, Andy Ogles, and Kat Cammack. It remains to be seen how President Trump will respond to this call for the formal recognition of Taiwan.
