Boston college student charged with Tesla dealership firebombing in Missouri

A college student from Boston, Owen McIntire, found himself in hot water after allegedly launching a Molotov cocktail at a Tesla dealership in Missouri while home on spring break. The 19-year-old was arrested by federal authorities in Boston and appeared in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts to face charges of unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device and malicious damage by fire of any property used in interstate commerce.

The incident occurred on March 17 when a Kansas City Missouri Police Department officer near the Kansas City Tesla Center noticed smoke rising from a Cybertruck parked in the lot. Upon investigation, the officer discovered a Molotov cocktail near the burning vehicle, which had spread to another vehicle and damaged two Tesla charging stations. The estimated value of the damages totaled over $200,000.

Forensic experts from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recovered key evidence, including the Molotov cocktails allegedly used in the arson. Video footage of a person believed to be McIntire was also found, showing him lighting the devices and throwing them at the Cybertrucks before walking away. DNA evidence from a hat found near the scene matched that of the suspect.

U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi issued a stern warning to those considering similar actions, stating that perpetrators will be arrested, prosecuted, and face lengthy prison sentences. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that crimes targeting Tesla are dangerous and illegal, and those responsible will be held accountable.

The arrest of McIntire marked the second of the week for crimes targeting Tesla, with authorities from the FBI Kansas City and Boston field offices, ATF, and Kansas City, Missouri Police Department collaborating on the investigation. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless and destructive behavior, and the importance of upholding the law to ensure public safety.
