How basketball prepared this Grammy-nominated N.S. musician for the biggest stages

Musician Laura Roy has had an incredible journey, from dominating the basketball courts of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley to performing in front of massive crowds around the world. Growing up in Canning, N.S., Roy’s first love was sports, particularly basketball. As a former point guard, she learned valuable lessons about perseverance and facing adversity on the court, skills that have translated well into her music career.

Roy’s hard work and dedication paid off when she had the opportunity to perform at Wembley Stadium in London, backing up pop star Sabrina Carpenter. Despite the lack of rehearsal and proper sound check, Roy delivered a stellar performance, showcasing her talent and professionalism. This was just one of many highlights from her successful year, which also included backing up Carpenter for a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance and touring with British musician JP Cooper.

While Roy has gained recognition for her work as a backing vocalist, she is now ready to step into the spotlight as a solo artist. Her recent win at the East Coast Music Awards for Vocal Release of the Year for her song “Lucy” is a testament to her talent and dedication to her craft. With her music classified as alternative R&B, Roy has released three EPs and is now working on a new album with local musicians in Nova Scotia.

Despite her success, Roy remains humble and grateful for the opportunities that have come her way. She credits her time living in Halifax, Toronto, and London, as well as her experience working in hospitality, for shaping her as an artist. Roy’s journey has been filled with ups and downs, but she has always remained focused on her passion for music.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a temporary pause on Roy’s music career, forcing her to return to work at a café during lockdowns. However, she remained positive and focused on her goals, eventually receiving two Grammy nominations for her contributions to artist Doja Cat’s album “Planet Her.” Roy’s resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere, proving that hard work and dedication can lead to success in the music industry.
