Canada announces 6 new immigration measures to attract tech skills

Today, Immigration Secretary Sean Fraser announced six new improvements or ideas to attract tech talent from around the world to Canada.

First, IRCC will be launching a new and dedicated Permanent Residency (PR) pathway specifically for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workers.

Under the Global Talent Stream launched many years ago, new work permit applications are now processed in 2 weeks.

In addition, Startup Visa program for entrepreneurs of extraordinary potential, who have faced a number of challenges and received more applications than available places.

Recently, IRCC increased the number of rooms from 1,000 per year to 3,500 per year.

Going forward, IRCC will prioritize applications that have an investment commitment or have approval from a trusted partner.

Apart from this, for the applications that are in the normal queue, the applicants and their dependents will be granted an open work permit for 3 years to work in Canada while their application is pending.

In the course of this year, Canada will develop a new stream specifically for employees who work for technology companies, whether they have been offered a job or not.

Canada will launch a digital nomad strategy, allowing people with a foreign employer to come and work in Canada for up to 6 months and spend time in Canadian communities.

If they get a job offer from a Canadian employer while here, they are allowed to stay and work in Canada.

Finally, starting July 16, Canada will start a new flow to allow 10,000 H-1B visa holders in the United States to come and work in Canada.
