US flies nearly 200 illegal immigrants back to Venezuela from GITMO

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently discussed the efforts being made to secure the southern border and deport dangerous criminals who have entered the United States illegally. She emphasized the importance of targeting “the worst of the worst” individuals with criminal records.

In a significant development this week, nearly 200 Venezuelan illegal immigrants who were detained at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, were sent back to their home country. The Venezuelan citizens were flown back to Caracas after a stopover in Honduras. Images from the scene showed the immigrants wearing gray sweatsuits as they awaited boarding the plane.

This is not the first instance of Venezuelan immigrants being deported from the United States. Last week, 190 individuals were sent back to Venezuela. President Donald Trump had previously expressed a desire to expand immigrant detention centers at Guantánamo to accommodate up to 30,000 people.

Venezuela has historically been reluctant to accept the repatriation of its citizens, but recent political discussions and investments have led to a change in policy. The U.S. government has alleged that some of the immigrants transferred to the naval base are members of the Tren de Aragua gang, which was designated as a “foreign terrorist organization” by Trump.

The actions taken by Venezuela to accept deported citizens could signal a shift in their willingness to cooperate with the U.S. on immigration matters. The government of President Nicolás Maduro has emphasized its commitment to fighting terrorism and criminal organizations while denouncing any attempts to manipulate these issues for political gain.

In conclusion, the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants from the United States highlights the ongoing efforts to address illegal immigration and national security concerns. The collaboration between the two countries in this matter reflects a shared commitment to maintaining border security and addressing criminal activities.
