LA wildfires: NBA postpones Lakers-Hornets game

Wildfires Force Postponement of Lakers and Kings Games in Los Angeles

Amidst several massive wildfires ravaging the greater Los Angeles area, the NBA made the decision to postpone the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday. This comes after the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings had their game against the Calgary Flames postponed the previous day.

The wildfires, fueled by extraordinary winds, have led to three major fires burning across the city, with roughly 180,000 people under evacuation orders. The fires have already consumed about 45 square miles, making it the most destructive in Los Angeles’ history.

NFL Playoffs Update

Despite the ongoing wildfires, the Los Angeles Rams have confirmed that their NFC wild-card round postseason game against the Minnesota Vikings will proceed as scheduled at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Monday night. However, the NFL has contingency plans in place, with State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, being considered as an alternate venue if needed.

Both the Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers are closely monitoring the air quality due to the fires. The Chargers have adjusted their practice schedule to minimize outdoor exposure, while the Rams continue their preparations for the upcoming playoff game.

NBA and College Basketball Updates

In the NBA, Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard left the team before their game against the Denver Nuggets for personal reasons. Leonard, who resides in Pacific Palisades, received full support from his team as he attended to family matters.

On the college basketball front, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team had to postpone their game against the University of Portland due to the wildfires affecting the Malibu campus. Access to the coastal campus has been restricted, leading to the cancellation of classes and athletic events.
