A 71-year-old man from Cornwall, Ont., is facing charges after allegedly stabbing an elderly woman in Ottawa in what police believe to be a hate-motivated crime.
According to reports, the incident took place at a supermarket on Basic Lineweg, where the victim, a woman in her 70s, was shopping with a friend. The man approached her and stabbed her, causing serious injuries.
The victim was treated at a hospital and has since been released.
The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs has confirmed that the victim is a member of the Jewish community in Ottawa. The supermarket, known for its kosher food section, has reportedly been the target of protests in the past.
The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon, according to police.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney have both denounced the attack, calling it disturbing and senseless.
Police have stated that they are in communication with leaders of the Jewish community and will be increasing their presence in the area to ensure the safety of the community.
