FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino claims bureau ‘closing in’ on suspects who planted Jan. 6 DC pipe bombs

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has recently made significant strides in the investigation of the pipe bombs placed near the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. In a recent interview on “Fox & Friends,” Bongino expressed confidence that the bureau is “closing in” on suspects involved in the incident, hinting at a possible resolution to the long-standing mystery.
The discovery of the two pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committees’ headquarters coincided with the chaos that unfolded at the Capitol on that fateful day. Since then, there has been speculation and scrutiny surrounding the handling of the case, with some suggesting it may have been an “inside job” orchestrated to advance a political agenda.
As a former Secret Service agent and outspoken commentator, Bongino has been vocal about his skepticism regarding the FBI’s handling of the case. However, now in his role as deputy director, he faces mounting pressure to provide updates and transparency on the progress of the investigation.
One key piece of evidence in the case is video footage released by the FBI, showing an unidentified individual planting the pipe bombs near the headquarters. Descriptions of the suspect include wearing a gray hoodie, Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers, a face mask, glasses, and gloves. Additionally, the FBI revealed that the suspect is approximately 5-foot-7 in height.
The discovery of the pipe bombs was made by a Capitol Hill resident who alerted a security guard after spotting the first bomb in an alley behind the RNC headquarters. This prompt action led to the subsequent discovery of the second bomb at the DNC headquarters, averting a potentially catastrophic event.
Further investigation revealed that the pipe bombs were “viable” and equipped with one-hour timers. Fortunately, the timers had already elapsed by the time they were discovered, preventing any detonation. Notably, then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were in close proximity to the bomb near the DNC headquarters at one point.
Despite receiving over 600 tips, the FBI continues to offer a $500,000 reward for any successful leads in the case. Leads have included individuals searching for “pipe bomb DC” online and those who recently purchased the distinctive Nike shoes seen in the surveillance footage. However, the pace of the investigation slowed after the initial flurry of leads, leaving many unanswered questions.
As the investigation unfolds, the public eagerly awaits updates and closure on this pivotal case. With Bongino at the helm, the FBI is poised to bring justice to those responsible for the brazen act of violence near the Capitol.
