Omar to seek House re-election, quashing Senate speculation

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a prominent member of the “Squad,” has officially put an end to speculations about her potential run for Minnesota’s open Senate seat in 2026. Instead, she has announced her decision to seek re-election for a House term. In a statement to Minnesota Public Radio, the Minneapolis Democrat emphasized the importance of fighting against the chaos and corruption brought about by the Trump Administration.

Omar expressed her commitment to grassroots organizing efforts and highlighted the significance of mobilizing the community for the upcoming midterms. She confidently stated, “In Minnesota, we know that organized people will always beat organized money.”

Having secured a decisive victory in her previous race for the 5th Congressional District seat, defeating Iraq-born Republican journalist Dalia al-Aqidi by a substantial margin, Omar has solidified her position as a formidable candidate.

Speculations regarding potential successors to Sen. Tina Smith, who recently announced her decision not to seek re-election, had included Omar among the contenders. However, Omar’s focus remains on her re-election bid for the House, as she aims to continue her advocacy for progressive causes.

Fellow Democrat Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan has already entered the race for Smith’s Senate seat, while Omar and other potential candidates have chosen to remain silent on their intentions. In a separate development, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has been rumored as a possible primary challenger to Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer in 2028.

The decision by Smith to step down was described as a personal one, with the senator expressing a desire to spend more time with her family. Governor Tim Walz also opted not to run for the Senate seat, leaving Flanagan as the most prominent Democrat in the race thus far.

On the Republican side, retired Marine and Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze and former Sacramento Kings player Royce White have announced their bids for the Senate seat. The upcoming race to succeed Smith will mark Minnesota’s first open Senate race since 2006, offering an opportunity for new leadership to emerge.

With endorsements from figures like former Senator Al Franken, Flanagan’s candidacy has gained momentum. As the political landscape in Minnesota evolves, the race for the Senate seat promises to be a closely watched contest.

As Rep. Ilhan Omar embarks on her re-election campaign for the House, her decision to forego a Senate run reflects her dedication to serving her constituents and advancing progressive values. The political landscape in Minnesota is set for a significant shift, with candidates from diverse backgrounds vying for the opportunity to represent the state in the Senate.
