Connor McDavid has no timeline on contract extensions

Connor McDavid, the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, recently expressed his desire to stay with the team for the long haul. With just one year left on his current contract, speculation has been rife about whether he will sign an extension before training camp begins.

During a recent visit to a Hockey Canada orientation camp in Calgary, McDavid reiterated his commitment to the Oilers, stating that he wants to win with the team but also wants to take his time in making a decision about his future. The 28-year-old superstar, who was recently named to the Canadian men’s roster for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy, is entering the final year of an eight-year, $100 million contract that he signed in 2017.

“I intend to win in Edmonton. That is my only focus, perhaps in addition to winning a gold medal with Canada,” McDavid said. “Taking my time, going through it with my family, my agent, everyone involved. I’m slowly going through it.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation, McDavid remains focused on the upcoming season and is open to all possibilities, including potentially missing the start of training camp.

“All options are really on the table. I have no preference anyway,” he said. “I want the group to be so focused and united and ready to roll from day one. We don’t need distractions.”

The Oilers have come close to winning the Stanley Cup in recent years, reaching the final in back-to-back seasons only to fall short against the Florida Panthers. McDavid had an outstanding season, scoring 26 goals and 74 assists in 67 games, as well as adding seven goals and 26 assists in 22 playoff games. He also scored the overtime winner for Canada in a 3-2 victory over the US in the 4 Nations Face-Off final in February.
