Search crews recover backpack of Norwegian trekker missing in northern Manitoba

A Norwegian trekker’s backpack has been discovered near a fast-moving river in a remote coastal area of northern Manitoba, known for its polar bears and wolves. Canadian authorities have informed the family of Steffen Skjottelvik, 29, about the recovery of his bag near the Hayes River. This discovery has prompted an increase in search efforts, with the family working to raise funds for additional resources such as boats, helicopters, and more ground crew.

Skjottelvik was last heard from a week ago when he indicated his plans to arrive in York Factory, Manitoba, the following day. Despite these intentions, he never reached his destination. A volunteer team from Fort Severn First Nation initially led the search efforts but had to halt due to escalating helicopter rental costs.

Fort Severn Chief Matthew Kakekaspan shared that three searchers from his community, along with a helicopter pilot, have resumed the search after securing additional funding through donations. Skjottelvik had designated one of the searchers as an emergency contact before embarking on his journey on foot from Fort Severn towards York Factory.

Various fundraisers in both Canada and Norway are ongoing to support the search efforts, with donations helping cover expenses such as helicopter rentals. The goal is to raise $100,000 to continue the search for an additional four days. The RCMP has been utilizing thermal imaging drones and GPS data to pinpoint Skjottelvik’s last known location near the Hayes River.

The treacherous terrain between Fort Severn and York Factory presents challenges, including muskeg peat lands inhabited by polar bears and wolves. Prior to his disappearance, Skjottelvik mentioned losing one of his dogs in a wolf attack, with a husky resembling his missing dog found in a nearby community.
