New Orleans terror attack on New Years revelers not only deadly car-ramming

The recent deadly ramming attack on New Year’s revelers in New Orleans is not an isolated incident when it comes to suspected terrorists using trucks as weapons. This horrific event follows a similar attack in Magdeburg, Germany, where a Saudi Arabia-born doctor plowed a car into a crowded Christmas market, resulting in the deaths of five people, including a 9-year-old boy, and injuring over 200 others.
Unfortunately, car ramming incidents have become a disturbing trend in recent years, with similar attacks occurring in Nice, France; Waukesha, Wisconsin; and New York City. Former Department of Homeland Security official Brian Harrell emphasizes the vulnerability of “soft targets” and crowded places, warning that terrorists often target locations where people gather in large numbers.
The use of vehicles as weapons poses a significant threat, as demonstrated by the tragic events in New Orleans. The suspect, identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, rammed a truck into crowds on Bourbon Street, resulting in at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries. Jabbar, armed with a Glock and a .308 rifle, was killed by police after opening fire on them. The presence of explosive devices on Bourbon Street further underscores the severity of the attack.
As the investigation unfolds, it’s essential to acknowledge the gravity of such incidents and the need for heightened security measures at public venues and events. The FBI is treating the New Orleans attack as an “act of terrorism,” underscoring the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of such threats.
Despite the tragedy in New Orleans, the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame is set to proceed as scheduled, albeit under heightened security measures. This attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism and the importance of remaining vigilant in safeguarding public spaces.
In light of recent events, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prioritize security measures to prevent future attacks. The use of vehicles as weapons highlights the evolving tactics of terrorists and underscores the need for proactive measures to protect public safety. As we mourn the lives lost in New Orleans, we must also remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals in shared spaces.
