The Ottawa Police and Fire Department say the tornado touched down in the suburb of Barrhaven

A tornado touched down in a suburb on the south side of Ottawa, Police said Thursday, advising residents to seek shelter from the storm.

Police advised people to take shelter while they, along with firefighters and paramedics, were on scene in the Barrhaven area to assess the damage and assist residents.

“This incident has a large footprint and officers and partners are working diligently to assist anyone in need of assistance,” the Ottawa Police said on Twitter.

They also warned there could be road closures due to fallen trees and power lines.

Residents who wanted to be reunited with family members were told to go to the Minto Recreation Complex at 3500 Cambrian Rd. in Barhaven.

There are no reports of injuries yet.

Ottawa The fire department said about 50 homes were affected in the Umbra Place area of ​​Barrhaven.

“Firefighters are going door-to-door in the worst areas to monitor residents (and) shut off gas (and) hydropower on multiple units,” the agency said on Twitter.

Earlier, Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the entire National Capital Region.

“Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches,” the National Weather Bureau said.
