TikTok blocks #SkinnyTok due to extreme weight loss, disordered eating content
TikTok has recently taken a stand against promoting unhealthy weight loss behaviors by blocking search results for the hashtag “SkinnyTok.” The decision came after a surge in content that was linked to disordered eating and extreme thinness on the popular social media platform.
In a statement emailed to CBC News, TikTok explained that they regularly review their safety measures to address evolving risks, and blocking the #SkinnyTok search results was a necessary step to combat harmful content. The platform also mentioned that they continue to restrict videos from teen accounts and provide health experts and information in TikTok Search to educate users about the dangers of unhealthy weight loss practices.
The term SkinnyTok has been used to describe a subculture of influencers and content creators who promote extreme thinness. Under the hashtag, creators share videos with catchy phrases like “Skinny is the outfit,” encouraging viewers to pursue unrealistic weight loss goals through extreme methods.
As a result of TikTok’s actions, searches for SkinnyTok now yield no results, directing users to expert resources instead. In Canada, users are provided with contact information and links to organizations such as the National Eating Disorder Information Centre and Anorexie et boulimie Québec to seek help and support.
The decision to block SkinnyTok came after TikTok observed a rise in content promoting disordered eating and unhealthy weight loss behaviors earlier this year. This move aligns with efforts made by individuals like French Minister of State for Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz and nurse Charlyne Buigues, who have been advocating for the removal of the hashtag since April. Chappaz even reported the hashtag to France’s digital watchdog and the European Commission, leading to a petition with nearly 35,000 signatures calling for its ban.
On June 1, Chappaz celebrated the removal of the hashtag on TikTok, calling it a “first collective victory.” The action taken by TikTok highlights the importance of promoting positive body image and healthy behaviors on social media platforms, ensuring the well-being of users, especially young individuals influenced by such trends.
