N.S. claps back over Trump tariffs as Houston calls U.S. president a ‘short-sighted man’

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has announced a bold response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25 per cent tariffs on most Canadian goods. In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday morning, Houston criticized Trump as a “short-sighted man who wields his power just for the sake of it.”
The Premier expressed deep concern over the uncertainty and chaos caused by Trump’s threat of tariffs and the subsequent implementation of the tariffs on Canadian goods. In response, Nova Scotia will be taking immediate action to protect its economy and support local businesses.
One of the key measures announced by Houston is the suspension of American businesses from bidding on provincial procurements. This decision is effective immediately, with the province also exploring options to cancel existing contracts and reject bids from U.S. companies until the tariffs are lifted.
Furthermore, Nova Scotia will be doubling the cost of tolls at the Cobequid Pass for commercial vehicles from the United States. This move is aimed at offsetting the impact of the tariffs on local businesses and encouraging Canadian consumers to support domestic products.
In addition, the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. will once again remove all alcohol products from the United States from their shelves. This strategy was previously effective in hurting American producers who rely on Canadian markets for their products.
Houston emphasized that the province has allocated $200 million in the 2025-26 budget to address the impact of the tariffs, although specific funding requirements are yet to be determined. The Premier also highlighted the introduction of legislation by the PCs to break down barriers to interprovincial trade, calling on other provinces and territories to endorse and pass corresponding laws.
Acknowledging the importance of solidarity among Nova Scotians, Houston praised those who have chosen to buy local in response to the threat of tariffs. He urged citizens to stand together and support local businesses during this challenging time.
The decision to impose tariffs on Canadian goods comes as part of Trump’s ongoing trade war with Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, which will also take effect at the same time as Trump’s tariffs.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for provinces like Nova Scotia to take proactive measures to protect their economy and support local industries. By standing united and responding strategically to these challenges, Nova Scotia aims to mitigate the impact of the tariffs and safeguard its economic interests.
