Financial Aid Available for Long Lake Wildfire Evacuees in Nova Scotia
The Nova Scotia Department of Emergency Management is offering financial aid to those who have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the Long Lake Wildfire complex. The wildfire, which started on August 13, has grown to over 8,400 hectares in size.
Over 500 individuals have been evacuated from their homes, with 518 people registering at the Red Cross for assistance. The province is providing emergency funding to help with cash flow, out-of-pocket expenses, and insurance deductibles.
Residents who have been evacuated for various periods of time will receive financial assistance based on the number of individuals in their household. The goal is to help residents return home safely and address any challenges they may face upon their return.
Safety Precautions for Returning Residents
Residents are advised to have their oil tanks inspected for any damage caused by the fire. Signs of damage include swelling, discoloration, and peeling paint. It is also recommended to have well water tested after rinsing and disinfecting the well.
Last week, 20 homes and 11 outbuildings were destroyed by the fire. The municipality is working on a program to assist property owners in accessing support for rebuilding.
Firefighting Efforts and Weather Conditions
Crews are working to contain the fire, with favorable weather conditions aiding in their progress. Helicopters are dropping water on the southern end of the fire to establish a perimeter for ground crews.
There are currently 10 helicopters and four aircraft assisting in the firefighting efforts, with additional firefighters from Ontario and Quebec providing support. Weather forecasts predict mid-1920s temperatures for the week, with a warning for air quality remaining in effect.
