Trans European travelers warned about travel to US amid Trump ‘two-sexes’ order

European countries have updated their travel advisories for transgender travelers seeking to enter the U.S. in light of President Donald Trump’s “two-sexes” executive order and the administration’s immigration crackdown. Finland, Denmark, the U.K., and Germany are all urging cautionary planning for transgender individuals when traveling to the U.S.
The Danish travel advisory highlighted the issue of gender designation when applying for an ESTA or visa to the United States. The system only allows for two gender options – male or female. For individuals with a gender designation of X in their passport or who have undergone a gender change, it is recommended to contact the U.S. Embassy for guidance before traveling.
Similarly, Finland updated its website to address the potential challenges faced by individuals whose passport gender does not match their assigned gender at birth. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that U.S. authorities may deny travel permits or visas in such cases.
Germany also issued a travel advisory cautioning transgender travelers to be aware of potential difficulties they may encounter when entering certain countries. While not explicitly mentioning the U.S. or President Trump, the advisory serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution and seek guidance when necessary.
The Trump administration’s policy aligning with a binary understanding of sex has sparked backlash, with seven transgender Americans suing over the executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” This order mandates federal agencies to enforce a strict binary definition of sex across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and military service.
In addition to the gender-related concerns, President Trump’s nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration has faced judicial pushback. The mass deportation program targeting unauthorized individuals living in the country has raised concerns about human rights and due process.
As European countries update their travel advisories for transgender travelers, it is essential for individuals to stay informed and seek guidance when navigating the complexities of gender identity and international travel. The ongoing legal challenges and policy changes underscore the importance of advocating for inclusivity and respect for diverse identities in both domestic and international contexts.
