U.S. women’s rugby star, Olympian Alev Kelter stomps opponent’s head in Pacific Four Series match

United States Olympic Rugby Star Alev Kelter Faces Judicial Hearing After On-Field Incident
United States Olympic rugby star Alev Kelter is set to face a judicial hearing and potential suspension following an incident during a women’s rugby test against Australia. Kelter was sent off in the 79th minute of the Pacific Four Series test after referee Aimee Barrett-Theron reviewed footage showing Kelter stamping on the head of Australian center Georgie Friedrichs.
Barrett-Theron made the decision to issue Kelter a straight red card, stating, “12 blue [Kelter] is going to receive a permanent red card because this is thuggery, it is deliberate and it is very dangerous foul play. She’s clearly stamped on the head of the Australian player. That’s reckless, that’s dangerous and she’s going off.”
Fortunately, Friedrichs was not seriously injured in the incident, but the seriousness of foul play involving contact with the head cannot be understated. Rugby, like many other contact sports, has implemented strict rules to minimize the risk of concussion and other head injuries.
Kelter, a three-time U.S. Olympic representative in rugby sevens and a bronze medalist in Paris last year, has a background in ice hockey and soccer from her time at the University of Wisconsin. Judicial hearings for foul play in rugby typically occur within 48 hours of a match.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Australia emerged victorious in Saturday’s match, defeating the United States team 27-19. The U.S. team coach, Sione Fukofuka, issued an apology to the Australian players following the game.
