Trump dares Newsom to run in 2028, slams record on LA wildfires

President Donald Trump recently made headlines when he expressed his thoughts on California Governor Gavin Newsom potentially running for president in 2028. Trump, who was meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, took a swipe at Newsom, criticizing California’s high-speed rail project and his response to wildfires in the state.

During the meeting, Trump referred to Newsom as “Gavin New-scum” and lambasted the high-speed rail project as having the “worst cost overrun” he had ever seen. The project, originally estimated to cost $33 billion and be completed by 2020, is now projected to cost $106 billion due to funding challenges, cost overruns, and delays.

In addition to criticizing the rail project, Trump also took aim at Newsom’s handling of wildfires in California. He claimed that if Newsom had followed his advice to open up water resources, the fires in Los Angeles could have been extinguished more quickly.

In response to Trump’s comments, Newsom expressed a desire to work with the Trump administration on a $7.5 billion federal tax credit program to support the TV and film production industry in California. Newsom emphasized the importance of strengthening state incentives to bring more jobs to the state and advocated for a federal partnership to “Make America Film Again.”

While Trump acknowledged that he had a good relationship with Newsom in the past, he suggested that Newsom’s handling of the high-speed rail project, wildfires, and other issues would likely hinder his chances of running for president in 2028. Despite rumors of a potential presidential bid, Newsom has not confirmed whether he will enter the race.

Looking ahead, Trump reiterated his support for Newsom to run for president but hinted that the challenges faced by the governor, including the high-speed rail project and wildfires, may impact his candidacy. As the 2028 election approaches, all eyes will be on Newsom to see if he decides to throw his hat into the ring.
