Canada’s Dandjinou golden again at short track World Tour event in Seoul

Canadian short track speed skater William Dandjinou continued his winning streak at a World Tour stop in South Korea, clinching his second gold medal in as many days. The Montreal native secured the men’s 1,000-metre final on Sunday, following his victory in the men’s 1,500m final the day before.

Dandjinou’s winning time of one minute, 24.548 seconds in Sunday’s final placed him ahead of Dutch skater Jens van ‘t Wout, who finished in 1:24.741. The Canadian skater took the lead with four laps to go and maintained his position until the end.

“I didn’t want Jens [van ‘t Wout] to have the lead too early, so I managed to grab it from him,” Dandjinou said in a release.

Meanwhile, Florence Brunelle from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, overcame illness to secure the silver medal in the 500m final. Despite facing challenges behind the scenes, Brunelle expressed her determination to strive for gold in future competitions.

In the mixed team relay event, Brunelle and Dandjinou joined forces with Kim Boutin from Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Steven Dubois from Lachenaie, Quebec, to claim the bronze medal. The Canadian team initially finished fourth but moved up to third place after the Dutch team received a penalty for an infringement on the Canadians.

The Canadian Ice Maples currently lead the ISU Team Crystal Globe standings with 6,116 points, followed by the Korean White Tigers with 5,448 points and the Dutch Lions with 4,120 points. The next ISU Short Track World Tour stop is scheduled to take place in the Netherlands starting on February 7th.
